Background

The National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is an Australian Public Service agency responsible for whole-of-government coordination of policy development, program design, and service delivery for Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.


NIAA engaged Chandler Macleod to work in partnership with the agency to deliver the assessment and recruitment process for their 2024 Graduate Program.

Chandler Macleod undertook a comprehensive and highly personalized approach to crafting an assessment solution tailored to the unique needs of NIAA. This meticulously designed solution was conceived with the goal of providing a fair and equitable evaluation process that could seamlessly adapt to varying volumes of applications. 


Throughout the development phase, Chandler Macleod prioritised extensive engagement and consultation with internal NIAA stakeholders, recognising the paramount importance of their insights and expertise. This collaborative effort ensured that the assessment processes would be imbued with the ability to take into account the crucial diversity considerations that are fundamental to NIAA's values, while also offering a supportive and culturally competent framework.


The multifaceted solution that emerged from this collective endeavour included a personalised application review process, a one-way online video interview, online psychometric assessments, an online virtual assessment centre that emulated real-world scenarios to comprehensively evaluate candidates, and an integrated reference check process. These processes were not only meticulously designed to meet NIAA's unique needs but were also engineered to be exceptionally efficient and effective in handling any conceivable volume of applications. By harnessing digital and remote delivery methods, this assessment solution was equipped to seamlessly accommodate candidates from diverse geographical locations, further enhancing NIAA's accessibility and reach.


Great care was taken to ensure all assessments aligned with the relevant skills and capabilities that NIAA were seeking via this process. 


Key Outcomes


Over the course of an extensive four-day period, a cohort of more than 80 candidates engaged in a series of virtual assessment centres, seamlessly facilitated by a dynamic collaborative effort between the proficient teams of Chandler Macleod and the dedicated staff at NIAA. 


These multifaceted assessment processes, facilitated by Chandler Macleod staff, included a range of critical tasks, such as invitations, bookings, meticulous schedule management, assessor training, and unwavering candidate support and care throughout the entire journey.


Specifically, across the process:


  • Over 300 applications received and reviewed
  • Over 218 candidates invited to complete video interviews 
  • Over 80 candidates invited to Assessment Centre
  • 34 candidates were successfully navigated through the assessment process and been placed in the merit pool.
